HISTORY

QCH525: Teaching and Learning of Secondary History

QCH526: Assessment and Evaluation in Secondary History

One of the primary reasons why I chose to become a teacher was my passion for history and my desire to help others to enjoy it as much as I do. The history curriculum modules in NIE provided me with the skills to do just that. It was particularly important to familiarise myself with the many changes that have been made to the history syllabus since my time in secondary school. We were exposed to the inquiry approach now espoused by the ministry and were given plentiful opportunities to practise implementing them within lesson plans. We also practised using given rubrics to mark sample SBQ and structured essay answers before coming up with our own marking rubrics to our own SBQ and essay questions for the final individual assignment.

ENGLISH

QCE520: Language Teaching Approaches

A broad range of skills are taught during English classes in secondary schools, from traditional skills like letter writing and oral communication to more modern inclusions such as visual literacy. The English curriculum module in NIE walked us through the entire spectrum of skills as well as the techniques that we could use to teach these skills to students of varied ages and abilities. The important lesson that was learnt throughout this module was how commonly overlooked aspects of daily life could be used to teach English in the classroom. Everything from the travel magazines to advertisement posters could be edited to become usable resources in the classroom. We were also exposed to more creative methods of teaching English, such as the use of filmography to teach visual literacy and reading theatre scripts to teach oral skills.
